Panama's Retail Banks: Which Are Crypto-Friendly and Which Lead in Technology?

Panama has dozens of licensed banks, but only a smaller group serves everyday customers. We compare the country’s main retail banks on crypto policy, digital banking, payments and innovation.

Panama's Retail Banks: Which Are Crypto-Friendly and Which Lead in Technology?

Panama has dozens of licensed banks, but only a smaller group serves everyday customers through public branches and consumer accounts. For Bitcoiners and crypto businesses, the harder question is not simply where to open an account. It is which banks have a documented digital-asset strategy, which remain cautious, and which offer the best technology for ordinary banking.

The Superintendencia de Bancos de Panamá maintains the official list of banks operating under a general license. Many of those institutions focus on private banking, corporate clients, trade finance or international business rather than mass-market retail customers.

The main retail banks in Panama

A practical list of banks with consumer products or a public branch presence includes:

  • Banco General
  • BAC
  • Banistmo
  • Banesco Panamá
  • Global Bank
  • Banco Nacional de Panamá
  • Caja de Ahorros
  • Towerbank
  • Credicorp Bank
  • Mercantil Banco
  • St. Georges Bank
  • MetroBank
  • Banco Aliado
  • Banco Ficohsa Panamá
  • Banco LAFISE Panamá
  • Banco Pichincha Panamá
  • Banco Delta
  • Banco Azteca Panamá
  • Banisi
  • Unibank
  • Prival Bank
  • Canal Bank
  • Davivienda, including the former Scotiabank operation

The market is consolidating. Panama's banking regulator authorized the merger involving BAC and Multibank, so Multibank is now better understood as part of BAC's expanded operation than as a separate retail competitor. Read the regulator's announcement.

Davivienda also completed its transaction involving Scotiabank's operations in Panama, Colombia and Costa Rica, with a transition period for the Scotiabank brand. Read the transaction announcement.

What does "crypto-friendly" actually mean?

Receiving one transfer from an exchange does not make a bank crypto-friendly. A stronger definition requires a documented institutional policy: support for digital-asset activity, accounts for crypto companies, custody or conversion services, stablecoin payments, or reliable movement between crypto and dollars.

Using that standard, Towerbank is in a category of its own among Panama's retail banks.

Towerbank: the clearest crypto-banking option

Towerbank's Ikigii product combines a dollar bank account with access to BTC, ETH, USDT and USDC. Its published product information describes buying, selling, sending, receiving and converting supported assets, along with a debit card and Bitcoin-backed lending.

The bank also markets a corporate crypto offering for businesses working with digital assets. Towerbank describes support for on-ramping and off-ramping, custody, treasury activity, stablecoin payments and Web3 companies.

That is much more substantial than quietly tolerating an occasional exchange transfer. It is a deliberate crypto-banking strategy for individuals and businesses.

Caja de Ahorros: the bank to watch

Caja de Ahorros deserves attention because it is state-owned and has been publicly associated with plans to support Bitcoin-related banking activity. The Chambers Blockchain & Crypto Assets 2026 guide for Panama reports plans involving accounts connected with Bitcoin activity and dollar transactions.

The final products and operating details still need to be judged once they are formally available. For now, Caja de Ahorros is better described as an emerging crypto participant than a fully established crypto bank.

Its importance is hard to ignore. A state-owned retail bank formally servicing Bitcoin-related activity would change the institutional conversation in Panama.

Most banks remain cautious

Banco General, BAC, Banistmo, Global Bank and most other retail institutions do not advertise dedicated crypto-banking products. That does not mean every crypto-related transaction will be rejected. Banks make compliance decisions according to the customer, source of funds, transaction pattern and risk profile.

Banesco is more explicit. Its banking-services documentation includes restrictions concerning the use of accounts and cards on cryptocurrency or digital-asset trading platforms. Customers who regularly interact with exchanges should read the current terms and speak directly with the bank before choosing it for that purpose.

Which banks lead in financial technology?

Crypto is only one part of banking technology. For most customers, the quality of the mobile app, digital account opening, instant payments, card controls and mobile-wallet support matters more in daily life.

1. Banco General

Banco General has the strongest everyday digital ecosystem, largely because of Yappy. The service supports instant person-to-person transfers and merchant payments, while Banco General's broader platform covers accounts, cards, transfers, loans and mobile wallets.

Banco General is a technology leader. That should not be confused with having a public crypto strategy.

2. Towerbank

Towerbank leads in crypto and fintech experimentation. Ikigii's combination of dollar banking, digital assets, conversion tools and Bitcoin-backed credit makes it the most ambitious crypto product currently offered by a Panamanian retail bank.

3. BAC

BAC is one of the strongest conventional digital banks in the market. Its online and mobile banking services include digital account tools, card management, payments, transfers and other self-service features.

4. Caja de Ahorros

Caja de Ahorros has modernized quickly. Its mobile banking platform brings together transfers, payments, card services and integrations with tools such as Yappy and Kuara. Its possible move into Bitcoin-related services makes it one of the most interesting institutions to watch.

5. The next group

Banistmo, Banesco, Credicorp and Global Bank form the next tier of digitally capable retail banks. Credicorp, for example, promotes remote account opening with identity verification and a selfie.

Yappy's expansion beyond Banco General has also changed the competitive picture. Its participating-bank list includes Banco General, Banisi, Caja de Ahorros, Credicorp, Davivienda, MetroBank and St. Georges Bank. Customers no longer need to choose Banco General solely to gain access to Yappy.

A practical shortlist

The right bank depends on what you need:

  • For direct crypto banking: Towerbank
  • For a state-bank option with crypto potential: Caja de Ahorros
  • For broad digital banking and card services: BAC
  • For the largest everyday payment ecosystem: Banco General
  • For additional retail alternatives: Banistmo, Credicorp, Global Bank, Banisi, MetroBank and St. Georges Bank

A crypto company should conduct a separate review before opening an account. Personal banking, exchange transfers, corporate treasury activity and customer-facing crypto services carry very different compliance requirements.

The bottom line

Panama has many retail banks with capable apps and digital payment services, but public evidence of a formal crypto strategy is still rare. Towerbank is the clearest crypto-friendly retail bank because it offers documented digital-asset products rather than relying on case-by-case tolerance. Caja de Ahorros may become more important if its reported Bitcoin plans turn into fully operational services.

For everyday banking technology, Banco General and BAC remain strong choices. Banco General has the advantage of scale and a mature payment ecosystem, while BAC offers a broad set of modern mobile and card features. The right choice comes down to the customer's actual use case, especially when crypto activity is involved.

Bank products, policies and compliance decisions can change. Confirm current terms directly with each institution before opening an account or initiating crypto-related transactions.
